ASA, NNEKA, ODEMWINGIE VERIFY TWITTER ACCOUNTS

It looked like it would never happen, but Micro-blogging site Twitter has finally verified official accounts of some Nigerian celebrities.

And the first set of celebs include international singers Asa, Nneka and Premiership footballer Peter Odemwingie.

In June 2008, Twitter launched a verification program; allowing celebrities to get their accounts verified as a way of helping users verify which celebrity accounts were created by the celebrities themselves.

Prominent Nigerians and celebs such as Paul Okoye, Jim Iyke, and Wole Soyinka have all suffered from fake or parody accounts on Twitter which often mislead and confuse followers. With the new development this might stop soon.

Interestingly, the three new verified accounts are owned by people who have plied their trade in the international scene and have less than 50,000 followers as compared to the likes of Don Jazzy, Wizkid, and Banky W who have well over a hundred thousand followers but are more rooted in Nigeria.

The Nigerian with the highest Twitter followers so far is popular Pastor, Reverend Chris Oyakhilome totalling over a million.

On the evening of Sunday, March 11, 2012 Lagosian trooped out to attend the ‘Bashorun Gaa Versus’ album concert hosted by Abolore ’9ice’ Akande at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites.

The night was dominated by a series of colourful performances which lasted for about four hours, with 9ice calling on colleagues Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Davido, Don Jazzy and K1 for support.

Even though he was to be the centre of attention of the night, 9ice however handed the microphone to Fuji giant K1 who along with his band rendered throwback songs for over an hour to the pleasure of the excited crowd.

JUSTIN BIEBER GETS $100,000 ELECTRIC CAR AS BIRTHDAY GIFT

A $100,000 (N16M) Fisker Karma electric car has been given to the world famous music figure, Justin Bieber for his 18th year birthday.

Justin who clocked 18 on March 1, 2012 was presented the luxury 2012 vehicle with a solar-parallel roof by his manager, Scooter Braun while appearing on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres show’.

Prior to this exotic gift, Justin had earlier lost a car to a serious accident involving his maternal grandparents, Bruce and Diane Dale, an accident that left his grandfather with broken ribs.

The car with a two-litre, four hybrid engine can do more than compete with a typical gas guzzling sport car as it can go from 0-60 miles per hour in under 6 seconds with a top speed of 125 mile per hour.

Features of the electric car include keyless entry, bucket seats, and a diamond dust in the paint. Prior to this addition, Justin owns a batman-themed customised Cadillac and a Ferrari.

He was the first artist to have seven songs from a debut album chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

THE RETURN OF ROOFTOP MCS

The conscious Nigerian rap duo, Rooftop MCs are back!

The duo, Sokleva and Soul Snatcha have been off the radar since the release of their last album, a free LP called ‘Back At One’. Now, they’re ready to release their 5th album ‘CROSSEYED: Minority Report 2’ in September 2012.

And to usher this album, Kleva and Snatcha say they’ll be releasing their first ever mixtape. Titled ‘SERIES: Season One’, the mixtape will ‘take its concept from Popular TV series and in some instances sample the theme music’.

‘We enjoy a lot of these TV shows and they have become a steady source of entertainment for people everywhere so I just told Kleva let’s do this and that’s how we got to work’, Snatcha, who recently got married, says.

The music will be released by putting out a new song every Sunday in the month of March 2012 Via the group’s official twitter handle @rtmcsupdates, Facebook fanpage (Rooftop-MCs) as well as blogs and social media networks using the Hasgtag #SeriesSundays.

The complete body of work will be then be put out on Sunday, April 1, 2012.

The mixtape is hosted by UK based producer Shabach Nwaname of Beautiful Soundz.

YES – DIDDY WON AN OSCAR TOO!

Last night at the 84th Academy Awards, hip-hop wasn’t left out as Bad Boy label chief, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs walked away with an Oscar too!

The entertainment mogul won the award for ‘Best Documentary’ in his role as executive producer for the film ‘Undefeated’. Undefeated is a film about a high school football team from Memphis, Tennesee that undergo the struggles of life in a rough Memphis area.

The movie was directed by African-American documentary filmmaker T.J. Martin and Daniel Lindsay. This is the first time an African-American director has won the prestigious award.
